Tea Tree and Mint Shampoo Bar

For the Water Goddess — the shower is where the day gets rinsed off.

The rice terraces of Longsheng, in the mountains of southern China, have been farmed for seven hundred years, and the women of the Red Yao villages there have washed their hair in fermented rice water for just as long. This bar carries that rice water into solid form, cut with tea tree oil and mint so it lands cold and clean across the scalp. Cocoa butter keeps it from stripping.

Wet your hair, glide the bar root to tip a few times, then work the lather through with your fingers. One bar runs to about sixty washes — roughly three plastic bottles that never got made. Safe on color, and on extensions and wigs. Follow with the matching conditioner bar, and give both somewhere to dry between uses.
