Castile soap is the old answer, and it has never needed improving on. Olive oil soap, aloe vera gel and citric acid, sharpened with lemon, clove, cinnamon, rosemary and eucalyptus — the same oils that have been cutting grease and scenting kitchens since long before anyone thought to add a warning label. Nothing in the bottle you would not recognize by name. Nothing you need to open a window to escape.
Spray the counters, the stovetop, the sticky ring the honey jar leaves behind, the fingerprints down the hallway at exactly the height of a four-year-old. Wipe. The amber glass keeps the oils honest in the light; the clear lets you see what you have left. When the sprayer runs dry, bring it in and fill it — sixteen ounces at the counter, or a thirty-two ounce refill for the cabinet under the sink.
