Unbleached organic cotton flannel, serged at every edge so it will not fray or shed threads through wash after wash. That is all it is, and that is rather the point — the packs sold in glossy boxes are the same cloth with more packaging. Saturate it with castor oil, warm it, and let it rest where you want it. The ritual is old, the fabric is honest, and one of these lasts for years if you keep it in its bag between uses.
