Handmade Sisal Spa Shower Puff

For the Earth Goddess — the one who long ago decided that caring for her skin and caring for the ground under her feet were never two separate decisions.

The fiber comes from Agave sisalana, a succulent that grows in dry soil and gives up its long leaves without protest. Sisal is firm without being punishing — a medium-strength fiber whose natural rounded edges will not score the skin the way a plastic mesh puff does. The head on this one is genuinely full, an abundant, plush cloud of it, hand-tied in Sri Lanka by women producers earning a fair wage for the work. Nothing in it has been sprayed, dyed with anything questionable, or spun from petroleum. When it finally wears out, it goes in the compost.

Use it wet in the shower, lathered with whatever soap you love, and it becomes an exfoliating scrub that leaves skin polished rather than raw. Use it dry, before the bath, in long strokes toward the heart, and it becomes a dry-brushing ritual — five slow minutes that wake up the whole body better than coffee does. Hang it to dry between uses and it will keep its shape for a good long while.
