Cinnamon, cloves, allspice and orange zest, dried slowly so the oils stay in the peel instead of escaping into the air of somebody's factory. Drop them into a pot of apple cider and you have spiced cider; drop them into red wine and you have the drink people linger over. The jar wears a flannel pattern and arrives sealed.

Simmer a spoonful in cider or wine for twenty minutes and strain. The more interesting move is steeping them in vodka, rum or moonshine for a week — you end up with a spirit that tastes like December and costs almost nothing to make.
