A kantha quilt begins life as several worn cotton saris, layered and then stitched together by hand — thousands upon thousands of small straight running stitches worked across the entire surface by artisans in India. The technique is centuries old and entirely practical in origin: nothing was ever thrown away. What it produces, though, is a textile no machine can counterfeit. No two are alike. This one is the Jazz colorway, and it earns the name.

King size, so it covers a bed the way a bedspread is supposed to — or drape it over a couch, a chair, the foot of a daybed, a porch railing in September. A plain cotton backing gives it weight and comfort. Fair-trade sourced, which means the women who stitched it were paid properly for the months it takes. Buy a few and add a whole kaleidoscope to a room; it also makes an unreasonably good wedding gift.
