In Hawaiian genealogy, kalo is not a crop. It is the elder sibling — the firstborn who became the taro plant so that the second-born, humankind, would have something to eat. Which is why the loʻi terraces are still tended by hand, why the leaf shape shows up carved into everything, and why putting it on a sock is a slightly bigger gesture than it looks. The print here is that heart-shaped leaf in deep and pale green, drawn with real affection.
