They arrive flat and stiff, like coasters, and you would be forgiven for thinking something had gone wrong in shipping. Then you run one under the tap and it swells to six times its size — a plump, plant-based sponge with no plastic in it anywhere. It is one of those small domestic conjuring tricks that never quite stops being satisfying.

Use them the way you use any sponge: dishes, counters, the bottom of a travel mug. Rinse and lay them flat to dry between uses. When one has finally done its work, tear it up and bury it in the compost, where it disappears the way a leaf does.
