The photographs that end up mattering are almost never the posed ones. They are the candid frames from the middle of the evening: somebody laughing at something no one remembers, a card game in progress, a face caught mid-sentence. You never know at the time which ones you will keep. You find out years later, when you pull the little stack out of the box and discover the whole year is in there.
