The Looking Glass Bamboo Duster Kimono

For the Fire Goddess — the one who reads the moon phase before she reads the weather.

This one is built out of found things. The flowers and foliage are rare photographic studies from the late 1800s. The portrait is Alice Liddell, the girl who sent Lewis Carroll down the rabbit hole, photographed as a grown woman in 1872 by Julia Margaret Cameron, who returned to her as a subject again and again across a lifetime. The moon is a real observatory plate from Harvard. The stars scattered through the trim, and along Alice collar, came off a fragment of wallpaper from the same era. A hundred and fifty years of other people looking up, collaged into one garment.

Duster length means it falls nearly to the ankle and moves like water when you walk. Wear it open over all black and let the print do every bit of the work. Over jeans and boots it turns an ordinary evening into an entrance; over a slip it is the most dramatic possible way to answer the door.
