Blackberry on its own is a simple pleasure. Blackberry with sage is something else entirely: the herb pulls the fruit back from sweetness and gives it a dry, faintly savory edge, so the whole thing tastes considered rather than candied. All-natural and concentrated, which means the bottle goes a good deal further than it looks like it should.

An ounce or so in a glass with vodka, gin or rum, topped with seltzer. Leave the spirit out and it is just as good — a proper mocktail rather than a consolation prize. Keeps for two years unopened, though that has never been the problem.
