Before there were candles in jars there was a pot on the stove: lemon, something green, a handful of salt, water kept at a lazy simmer while the house went about its business. Steam gets into the curtains and the corners that a spray never reaches, and it leaves nothing behind but the smell of a kitchen that has been used.

Tip the blend into a small saucepan with two to three cups of water, bring it just to a simmer, and top up the water as it cooks down. Give it a Sunday afternoon, or the twenty minutes before people arrive.
